#10722 Searching for Riches in Apache Junction, Arizona
In 1891, legendary miner Jacob Waltz declared on his deathbed that he stashed a trove of gold nuggets in a cave hidden high in the Superstition Mountains, 40 miles east of Phoenix. Many have sought to locate these elusive riches ever since. At the state park named after him, you can find true riches in moments spent looking up at the outstretched arms of a saguaro cactus four times your height; listening to a medley of thrashers’ whistles and cactus wrens’ chortles; and hiking trails lined with fuzzy-looking (but razor-sharp) teddy bear cholla and pungent chaparral bushes.
